Transaction Status Definitions

Every transaction in Green Check Direct has a status that shows where it is in the process. This article explains what each status means and how it affects your Available Balance and Current Balance.

What "posted" means

A transaction is posted once it has been fully processed and recorded to your account. Posted transactions are included in your Current Balance; transactions that haven't posted yet can affect your Available Balance but not your Current Balance.

Your two balances

Your dashboard shows two balances.

  • Available Balance is the amount you can use right now. It accounts for pending transactions and for funds on hold for transactions in progress. Every payment or transfer you send is checked against your Available Balance.
  • Current Balance is your posted balance. It changes only when a transaction posts to your account.

It's normal for the two balances to be different. The difference is usually made up of pending transactions and held funds that haven't been posted yet.

Balances and statuses don't always update at the same moment, so your Available Balance is the best guide to what you can use.

Transaction Statuses at a glance

Status

What it means

Effect on your balances

Pending

Not posted yet. The transaction is either in progress or waiting for review by Green Check.

Outgoing amounts are already deducted from your Available Balance. Your Current Balance doesn't change yet.

Processing

Approved and being processed, but not posted yet.

Outgoing amounts are already deducted from your Available Balance. Incoming ACH deposits are added to your Available Balance later in processing.

Completed

Posted to your account.

Included in both your Available Balance and Current Balance. Mobile check deposits work differently (see below).

Rejected

Declined during review by Green Check. No money moved.

Any held funds are released back to your Available Balance. Your Current Balance never changed.

Cancelled

Stopped before it was processed. No money moved.

The transaction won't post to your account.

Pending Transactions

A Pending transaction hasn't posted to your account yet. A transaction can be Pending for one of two reasons.

Transactions started outside Green Check Direct

Some transactions start outside Green Check Direct, such as an ACH payment sent to you, an ACH debit from a vendor, or a check you wrote that has been presented for payment. These show as Pending until they post, with a note such as "Transaction pending."

  • Your Available Balance already reflects the transaction.
  • Your Current Balance changes when the transaction posts. It then shows as Completed.

Waiting for review by Green Check

Some transactions you start in Green Check Direct are reviewed by Green Check before they're processed. These include:

  • All wire transfers
  • ACH transactions that go over your account limits

While a transaction is waiting for review:

  • Outgoing transactions (money leaving your account): a hold is placed for the amount when you submit it, so your Available Balance goes down right away. Your Current Balance doesn't change, and no money has moved yet.
  • Incoming ACH transactions (money coming into your account): the incoming amount isn't added to either balance while the transaction is waiting for review. If a fee applies, a hold may be placed for the fee amount, which lowers your Available Balance.

Some account fees also start as Pending, with a hold for the fee amount, until they're processed.

After review, the transaction moves to Processing if it's approved, or to Rejected if it's declined.

Processing Transactions

A Processing transaction has been approved (if it needed review) and is being processed, but it hasn't posted yet. How it affects your balances depends on the type of transaction.

Outgoing payments and transfers

This includes ACH payments, wires, and transfers between Green Check Direct accounts.

  • The amount has already been deducted from your Available Balance.
  • Your Current Balance changes when the transaction posts.

Incoming ACH transactions

This includes ACH transactions you start in Green Check Direct to bring money into your account.

  • When the transaction first moves to Processing, the incoming amount hasn't been added to either balance yet.
  • If a fee applies, a hold may be placed for the fee amount, which lowers your Available Balance.
  • Later in processing, the amount is added to your Available Balance.
  • When the transaction posts, your Current Balance updates and the status changes to Completed.

Once a transaction is Processing, it can no longer be cancelled.

Completed Transactions

A Completed transaction has posted to your account. It's included in both your Available Balance and your Current Balance.

  • Transactions started outside Green Check Direct, such as incoming wires, show as Completed once they post.
  • Reversals show as their own Completed transactions.
  • Mobile check deposits work differently. See "Mobile check deposits" below.
Rejected Transactions

A Rejected transaction was declined during review by Green Check. Only transactions waiting for review can be rejected.

  • No money moved.
  • Any held funds are released back to your Available Balance.
  • Your Current Balance never changed.
  • The amount no longer counts toward your account limits.
Cancelled Transactions

A Cancelled transaction was stopped before it was processed. Only Pending transactions can be cancelled.

  • No money moved.
  • The transaction won't post to your account.
Mobile check deposits

This section covers checks you deposit with mobile deposit. (Checks you write are covered under Pending above.) Mobile check deposits follow their own timeline, so the status isn't always the best guide to when the funds are available.

  • A Completed status on a mobile check deposit doesn't always mean the funds are available yet.
  • Some larger deposits stay in Processing longer, and the funds may not be available right away.
  • Your Available Balance is the best guide to what you can use.

Good to know

  • Pending and Processing transactions appear lighter in your transaction list, so you can spot items that haven't been posted yet; you can also search by status names to filter the list.
  • To see what you can spend or send right now, check your Available Balance rather than a transaction's status.
  • If you have questions about a specific transaction, don’t hesitate to reach out!.
